Dion Dublin and Jermaine Beckford slam Helder Costa in Leeds win v Aston Villa
Dion Dublin and Jermaine Beckford have slammed Leeds United winger Helder Costa for his role in Aston Villa’s goal on Saturday evening.
Anwar El Ghazi scored in the opening five minutes at Elland Road, sneaking in at the back post after a misplaced shot from Ollie Watkins.
The Sky Sports duo believe that Costa was found guilty of switching off when defending, and his side were punished because of that.
Speaking during live coverage of the game from Sky Sports, Dublin singled out the Portuguese international was his role in conceding.
“Costa just switches off, and any good player will find themselves at the back post,” he said.
Beckford agreed, claiming that it could have been a problem with the communication from Illan Meslier in goal to his defence after the ball was recycled.
“For me, El Ghazi is just anticipating getting a shot off at the goalkeeper.
“He’s trying to pick up anything that falls in the six-yard box, but you’d like to think, Helder Costa is switched on more, but maybe that comes from some miscommunication with his goalkeeper.”
It was very poor defending from Costa.
The Portuguese international was handed his first Premier League start since November after impressing off the bench recently, and it is safe to say that he didn’t take it.
Playing for Marcelo Bielsa, you have to be able to be effective in both thirds, and Costa simply let his side down with his marking.
Beckford and Dublin were spot on, and unfortunately, it eventually led to Leeds losing the game in what was a drab evening at Elland Road.
