‘Dear me’ – Ally McCoist reacts to Orta antics and Leeds promotion to Premier League

talkSPORT pundit Ally McCoist found the antics of Victor Orta at Pride Park hilarious and said that promotion for Leeds United was “meant to be” this season.

talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook was on the Breakfast show this morning (talkSPORT, 7.30am) and talked about how Leeds director of football Orta whipped out a pair of binoculars after the 3-1 win against Derby on Sunday.

That was in reference to the Spygate scandal that engulfed both clubs last season.

McCoist burst out laughing in the talkSPORT studio and said that Leeds getting back to the top-flight was a “wonderful, wonderful story”.

“I think there was a lot of nonsense spoken about Leeds,” McCoist said. “After they got beaten 2-0 by Cardiff everyone was saying it was their normal collapse.

“I said, hang on, they’ve lost to Cardiff and that was a tough game.

“Since then, dear me, their form has been fantastic. They’ve been absolutely terrific and there’s something very poignant about it… I think some things are meant to be. Not one but three Leeds legends, you think, was it meant to be?

“These players and Bielsa, it’s a wonderful, wonderful story. I’m thrilled that they’re back. You want all your best clubs in the top flight.”

The photo of Orta and the binoculars will go down as one of the enduring moments of a highly emotional weekend for Leeds.

The Leeds fans absolutely loved what he did at Pride Park and we’re glad that one club figure made reference to what happened last season.

And McCoist makes a really good point about what many pundits have been saying about Leeds towards the end of the season.

After just missing out on promotion last season, many pundits seemed to be almost begging for Leeds to collapse again.

However, since drawing with Brentford 1-1 back in February, Leeds have only lost one and drawn one and won the other 11.

That’s incredible form and it’s six points more than Brentford have won in the same period.

While everyone was talking about Leeds blowing up, Brentford were being praised for their unbelievable form.

Narratives are a funny old thing.
