‘Crack open the champagne’ – These Leeds fans react to EFL update from Phil Hay

Athletic journalist Phil Hay conducted a Q&A on Friday morning, with the latest updates on the EFL amid the Coronavirus outbreak – and Leeds United fans have reacted on Twitter.

Hay said that it could cost clubs £20k+ a week to conduct the testing necessary to stage games but that the Championship was still keen to play the remaining fixtures.

Hay also talked of the EFL view that if leagues couldn’t be finished, positions would be decided on ‘sporting merit’. That reflects the views of UEFA.

Leeds might want to win promotion on the pitch but, as a last resort, this would surely be good news. It’s hard to think of any metric that wouldn’t see Leeds end up in the top two spots.

Writing on the Athletic, Hay said: “If the EFL season can’t conclude, the governing body wants leagues to be decided on sporting merit most likely on a points-per-game basis.

“The EFL is tentatively talking about three promotions from each league with no relegations, creating a larger Premier League for one season.”

One Leeds fan picked up on the ‘sporting merit’ edict and said this would seal promotion for Leeds saying, “Crack open the champagne then?”

That might be a bit premature, with the EFL still pushing to play the remaining nine games of the season.

Another fan looked further ahead and said that next season shouldn’t start until fans were let back into grounds. However, there’s been talk that might not happen until 2021.

The supporter also said that he thought the 19/20 season would end early, which would be “heartbreaking”.

In typical Leeds fashion he also said the EFL would decide the league on alphabetical order – thankfully, something that is highly unlikely!
