Courtney Sweetman-Kirk drools over Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier v Wolves

Leeds United have earned all three points from their opening Premier League game against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Elland Road on Saturday (6 August).

The home side came from behind to earn a fantastic victory, where Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier was superb during the game.

Courtney Sweetman-Kirk, a football pundit working for Sky Sports, has showered heaps of praise on the young French goalkeeper for a crucial save in the first half.

Towards the end of the first half, the Whites survived a late chance as Leander Dendoncker looked all set to finish from close range, but Meslier was equal to the task.

“That could completely change the complexion of the game. Meslier, lovely little feet. He does so well there. Keeps himself big for as long as possible,” said Sweetman-Kirk on Premier League Tv Production [6 August].

“He saves with his foot. It’s a massive save. Just before half time.”

Great start

It was a fantastic start from the Whites, and Jesse Marsch needed that win to boost the confidence in the side.

The four debutants played a big part, and there are plenty of positives to take from the game.

First of all, to come back from behind and secure a win is always satisfying, and Leeds did exactly that. Some of the attacking moves were just outstanding with the likes of Jack Harrison, Patrick Bamford and Brendan Aaronson being just too good.

After a nervy start, Leeds defended really well, though this is one area the club need to improve going forward. In the second half, for a spell of 10-15 minutes, Wolves kept on piling pressure, but the defence stayed resolute.

Meslier in particular made some fabulous in that spell and made sure that the Whites do not concede any further goals.

Leeds could have extended their lead had they been more clinical, but credit goes to the players for keeping it tight at the back, even when the game opened up towards the end.
