Chris Waddle not having what Leeds fans did vs Liverpool – ‘Ridiculous’

Chris Waddle was surprised to hear Leeds United fans complain about a decision that went against their side in the first half of the clash with Liverpool.

Leeds were underdogs heading into the game with Liverpool, even accounting for the Reds’ terrible form this season.

However, the sides went into half-time of Saturday evening’s contest level at 0-0 in what was a quiet opening 45 minutes.

All the talk ahead of the match was about Daniel Farke’s Leeds future, though the German could be happy with what he saw in the first half.

Elland Road crowd not happy with Anthony Taylor

There was a moment late in the first half when Elland Road almost celebrated as though a goal had been scored.

That was after referee Anthony Taylor awarded the Whites a free-kick, after a string of decisions that went against the home side.

One of those was for a Pascal Struijk challenge on Hugo Ekitike, which it is fair to say the Leeds supporters in attendance were not happy with.

However, when it was pointed out by Ian Dennis that Leeds fans did not really have anything to complain about, co-commentator Waddle replied: “I agree.

[Struijk] just needs to hold him up and not give away a free-kick. It’s ridiculous really [that fans complained].”

Leeds and Liverpool combine to do something not seen since April 2024

Liverpool fired away eight shots in the first half to Leeds’ five, but neither goalkeeper was tested in a low-quality half.

In fact, the 13 combined shots without a single one being on target is the most in the first half of a Premier League match since Everton versus Brentford in April 2024 (16 shots).

A lot more is needed in the second half, although Leeds will see this as a positive point should it remain the same.

Liverpool may be a fading force, but a point against one of the established elite can never be considered a bad thing.
