BT Sport pundit reacts to Joe Gelhardt controversy in Leeds defeat v Monaco

Tony Dorigo believes referee Andy Madeley made the right decision not to award Joe Gelhardt a penalty during Leeds United’s clash with Monaco.

The Whites were beaten 4-2 in their final friendly before the resumption of the Premier League season at Elland Road on Wednesday night (21 December).

But during the first half there was an incident that saw young striker Gelhardt look to win a penalty, but LUTV commentator Dorigo (7:43pm, 21 December) felt he was looking for it the whole time and it was the right call not to give it.

“He’s caused a real problem as he goes to ground,” Law said. “Home supporters at least are adamant they Leeds should have had a penalty.

“The referee knew exactly what Gelhardt was going to do and so do I,” Dorigo replied.

“He was looking for it all day long. He gets the first touch. It’s those stiff legs again but the real firm challenge didn’t come. I’m not sure if the goalkeeper actually touched it or not. It still could have been a penalty just from the reaction and the way that Gelhardt went down, that was the problem for me. I don’t think it is, not quite enough there.”

Gelhardt did score a penalty in second-half stoppage time, after Wilfried Gnonto was tripped in the box.

Silly

We know it was a friendly and the result doesn’t matter, but it was odd from Gelhardt not to just shoot rather than try to win the penalty.

The team really fell apart in the second half after Robin Koch was substituted and Diego Llorente came on, and that’s no surprise but is a big show of how little depth we have at the club right now.

The drop off in quality from the starting lineup when everyone is fit to when we have injuries is far too big for a Premier League club, and is a big reason as to why we find ourselves in another relegation battle.

We have to sort out this awful injury situation that is at the club right now, with so many players picking up knocks and injuries at the same time leaving us short despite a big gap between games.

As for Gelhardt, he needs to start hitting the net if he wants to be considered for a regular starting role, and that comes from shooting and not looking for penalties.
