BT Sport pundit: Patrick Bamford was 'rusty' for Leeds United in 2-2 draw v Brighton
Steve Sidwell claimed that Patrick Bamford was “rusty” in Leeds United’s 2-2 draw with Brighton, but believes keeping him fit is key to their survival hopes.
The Whites came from behind twice to earn a point at Elland Road thanks to goals from Bamford and Jack Harrison, but results elsewhere went against them and they now find themselves in 19th place in the Premier League.
And speaking during the game while live on BT Sport Score (11 March, 16:24), Sidwell admitted that he wasn’t overly impressed by the former England international despite his goal.
“Bamford.. he got the goal with a deflection but he was a little bit rusty,” he said.
“The ball was coming up to him normally when he can get hold of it and bring players in, but it got away from him. He worked the channels well, worked Dunk and Webster.
“Him being fit and keeping him fit again is key.”

When Bamford is at the top of his game for Leeds, he is exactly what the fans want to see stylistically and effort wise.
That’s an issue when he isn’t fit, because it’s been very difficult to find anyone who can match that level of output even without the goals.
His goal record has been pretty poor over the last 12 months, but there’s no doubt that he finds himself in the side more often than not because the team performs better when he is in it.
He showed that today with his constant pressing and running off the ball, and his goal was excellent too even if he did get some help from a deflection.
He’s only going to get better with more game time under his belt and if he can stay fit we all know that he is capable of scoring the goals to keep Leeds in this division next season.
