BBC pundit Steven Warnock has hailed Rodrigo and Raphinha as “quite brilliant” signings for Leeds United on Match of the Day (Tuesday, 10.50pm).
Warnock picked out the two players for their link-up play and quality on the ball in the 2-1 win over Newcastle at St James’ Park.
Raphinha scored the first and made the second for Jack Harrison.
“Quality, you need that quality on the ball and what they’ve done is they’ve brought in Rodrigo and they’ve brought in Raphinha, two quite brilliant players,” Warnock said.
“What they do is, yes they get forward in numbers, but they also have this quality and awareness of what’s going on around them. The ability to find other players.
“What you also have is strength in running, athleticism. The link-up between these two players, the understanding… We talk about Leeds’ identity, it’s forward running.
“It just shows what they’ve brought into the club this summer.”
Raffy an instant hit
Raphinha has become an instant hit with the fans and he’s already starting to show that the £17m Leeds paid for him could be a snip.
Rodrigo has undoubted quality but his assimilation into the Leeds side is taking a bit more time.
He plays as a nine for Spain but Marcelo Bielsa is using him in a deeper role at Leeds and it hasn’t always worked out.
However, in the 3-0 win against Aston Villa and against Newcastle, Rodrigo has shown that he has the ability to step up and take the number 10 role at Leeds.
He’s already keeping Pablo Hernandez out of the side.
Leeds spent over £100m in the summer and it was essential to get the right players in.
Victor Orta’s record since Bielsa has arrived has improved massively and the summer business is looking very astute already.
We’re not expecting anyone to arrive in this window but all eyes will then turn to the summer when we’re looking for another squad overhaul to take us to the next level.
