Jamie Carragher was raving about Patrick Bamford’s form for Leeds United on Monday Night Football after the Whites won 2-0 against Crystal Palace at Elland Road.

Bamford, 27, scored his 12th goal of the Premier League season in the win, which also happened to be his 100th career goal.

With the Leeds striker in such good form this season, there has been talk about him earning a call-up to the England squad ahead of the European Championships this summer.

Liverpool legend Carragher would love to see Bamford get a chance to impress Gareth Southgate ahead of the Euros and has paid tribute to the striker and manager Marcelo Bielsa for standing by him and getting the best out of him this season.

“In the Championship, he was getting criticised for missing a lot of chances,” said Carragher on Sky Sports on Monday night, as shown in a clip on Football Daily.

“Leeds spent a lot of money in the summer, they brought in Rodrigo and we thought he may take his position but he has to play a little deeper. But the fact [Bielsa] stuck with him told me that he did so much more for the team than just scoring goals.

“He wasn’t just in there to get the goals and that’s why I mention that question. He’s flying in terms of goals.

“He’s always been questioned at this level. Is he aggressive enough? I think a lot of things have been thrown at him at different times through his career at a few different clubs.

“I’d love to see him get a little sniff in the England squad. I mentioned a lot of other players and he was right, whoever gets put in the next squad in March or April would deserve it.

“I just think the journey he’s been on, the team he’s playing for, the effort beside the goals he puts in, leading the line and he’s just in a brilliant run of form. It’s just great to see.

On another level

Remember last season when a lot of fans were calling for Bamford to be dropped?

He went 10 Championship matches without a goal at one point and also suffered a seven-match dry spell later on in the season amid increasing calls for Bielsa to axe him from the starting line-up.

However, Bielsa stuck by the £35,000-a-week [Sun] striker. Why? Because he brings so much more to the team than just his goals.

As well as his 12 goals in the Premier League this term, Bamford also has six assists.

Leeds United have a lot of talented attacking players and play very much on the front foot. Bamford isn’t just used as a target for wingers to hit in the penalty area, he’s also used in a deeper role where he links up with the midfield and wide players to drag defenders out of position and create space in behind him.

Would Southgate benefit from having the Leeds forward in his squad? It will surely be though for Bamford to get a call-up.

Harry Kane is nailed on to be in the squad but then Southgate has Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Danny Ings, Marcus Rashford and Callum Wilson among his other options and all of them have done it for England before and done it in the Premier League on a regular basis.

Bamford might get a call-up in the build-up to the Euros or might get lucky if there are any injuries but we doubt he’ll get a spot in the squad, unfortunately.

In other Leeds United news, Gabriel Agbonlahor has confirmed he’s deleted his Twitter account due to abuse.
