Brenden Aaronson ripped apart for ‘awful’ moment in Leeds loss v Blackburn

Leeds United midfielder Brenden Aaronson was slammed by BBC Radio Leeds’ Jon Newsome for an “awful” moment in the loss to Blackburn Rovers.

The Whites were looking to move back to the summit of the Championship after Sheffield United’s victory against Sunderland on Friday (29 November).

After Blackburn had taken an early lead, a promising move for the Whites could have led to an equaliser on the stroke of half-time, but the American messed up his finish and smashed the ball over right in front of the goal.

BBC pundit Newsome did not hold back in his criticism of the 24-year-old, saying live on BBC Radio Leeds [30 November, 14:13pm]: “He spoons it off his shin and it spins away, high and wide. It’s just awful.”

Brenden Aaronson under pressure at Leeds United

The 24-year-old spent last season on loan at Union Berlin after the Whites’ relegation to the Championship, scoring two and notching two assists in an underwhelming campaign in Germany.

He embraced the second tier once he returned to Elland Road, scoring two goals in Leeds’ opening three league matches.

However, his form has slowed down and he has scored just two more in 15 games, also notching one assist in that spell.

The American endured a particularly difficult afternoon against Rovers, with everything he tried failing to have an impact on proceedings.

He had stated a desire to score 15 goals and notch 15 assists in the Championship this season but that looks like a huge ask, given that he has just four goals and one assist in 18 matches.

He was replaced by Largie Ramazani in the 69th minute as Daniel Farke attempted to find a way for his team to get back into the contest.

That was not to be the case, though, with Aaronson’s miss just one of a number of moments to forget on the day.

In other Leeds United news, the club have made a bold attempt to sign a Premier League player in January.
