Brenden Aaronson baffles with what he did for Leeds United in showdown v Sunderland
Brenden Aaronson has left Chris Iwelumo baffled after an incident in the showdown between Leeds United and Sunderland.
Daniel Farke’s side let their lead slip in the final stages courtesy of a mistake from Illan Meslier to draw 2-2 at the Stadium of Light on Friday (4 October) after both Joel Piroe and Junior Firpo found the net.
Before he scored his second-half goal, Firpo had an excellent chance to level things up in the first half only for Aaronson to steal the ball off of the full-back’s foot, much to the confusion of talkSPORT pundit Iwelumo live on air.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Friday (4 October, 20:25) he said: “I don’t know what he’s doing.
“Firpo’s coming in just to put his foot on it and Aaronson pokes it away from him. In that little melee did he know? It’s yellow socks so there can’t be any confusion.
“He didn’t even try to go for goal there. That’s a massive opportunity.”
What happened to Leeds United star Brenden Aaronson at Elland Road?
In an end-to-end game at the Stadium of Light, the passage of play that led to Aaronson stealing the ball off of Firpo’s foot was perhaps one of the most chaotic in the entirety of the game, barring the last-minute equaliser.
At that stage of the game, it felt as though the Whites would never score as they constantly spurned chance after chance with an array of poor finishing or confusing decision-making in the final third.

Ultimately, it is unclear whether or not Firpo’s goal would have counted had he managed to find the net as the referee was very quick to give a free-kick after several of the Sunderland players hit the deck in the chaotic melee.
While Aaronson has been excellent having returned to Elland Road this summer, he can still improve when it comes to making those split-second decisions. He is still young and hopefully, that sharpness will only improve as the season wears on.
