Brenden Aaronson baffles with what he did for Leeds United in clash v Sheffield United
Brenden Aaronson has left Curtis Davies baffled with a moment in the showdown between Leeds United and Sheffield United.
Daniel Farke’s side returned to domestic action after the international break with a 2-0 win at Elland Road on Friday (18 October) thanks to second-half goals from Pascal Struijk and Mateo Joseph.
While neither side came particularly close to breaking the deadlock in the first half, Sky Sports pundit Davies couldn’t believe that Aaronson opted to aim for the near post when faced with an open goal early on.
Speaking on Sky Sports Main Event (18 October, 20:54) he said: “You see here this chance for Aaronson.
“I don’t know why he goes for the reverse and goes for the near post. This was the best chance because the goal was wide open for him.
“He maybe sees a big Harry Souttar and doesn’t fancy it and goes for the front post. Unfortunately for him, it goes the wrong side of the post.”
What happened to Leeds United man Brenden Aaronson v Sheffield United at Elland Road?
Aaronson has certainly been one of the bright sparks early on this season, but he has missed several excellent chances and has been guilty of making some incredibly questionable decisions already this term.
His miss on Friday evening was disappointing as he had absolutely no need to aim for the near post. The other half of Michael Cooper’s goal was gaping, yet he still tried to beat the Blades’ keeper at his near post.

The US international just doesn’t appear to have that clinical edge in the final third, whether that be to pick out a pass or beat the goalkeeper. Hopefully, as the season wears on, he’ll begin to develop that skill in time.
Aaronson does deserve some sympathy as he was a doubt to feature against the Blades. Even when it wasn’t clear whether or not he would play, he gave his all and left everything he had out on the pitch to try and help his teammates.
