‘Bonkers’, ‘No way’ – These Leeds fans fuming as BBC demands change to Whites matchday coverage

Leeds United fans can expect a slightly different matchday experience from the BBC Radio Leeds team of Noel Whelan and Adam Pope today.

Whites fans love the commentary provided on matchday.

One of the big reasons is Whelan’s trademark “Get in!!!!!” celebrations when Leeds score – something he’s been doing a lot since Leeds were promoted to the Premier League.

However, it’s going to be muted from hereon in.

Whelan posted a tweet on Thursday warning Leeds fans that he’d been told to tone down his commentary after complaints from other radio stations.

Whelan deleted the tweet but replied to a number of Leeds fans who weren’t happy about the news.

One fan said the decision was “bonkers” and that ratings would drop as a result.

Whelan replied saying he could still celebrate the goals as long as he kept the noise down a bit.

We think this is a bit stupid from the BBC. Goals are there to be celebrated and passionate commentary adds to the matchday experience.

This is even more important with fans relying on services like this to follow games with matches being played behind closed doors.

It seems really churlish of other journalists to complain about Whelan and we hope that in the heat of the moment he forgets the new directive and really lets rip.

If Leeds score a late winner against Man City this evening, we can see that happening and we’ll be watching the game on Sky with Whelan on in the background today.
