‘Binoculars around their necks’ – Many Leeds fans pray for one thing as Derby face ‘nightmare’
The morning after one of the most incredible wins for Leeds United and it still feels fresh.
The game against Swansea might have been painful to watch for 89 minutes but football has a way of surprising you and the late Pablo Hernandez winner has finally got 99% of Leeds fans believing.
It’s also got plenty of them hoping too.
Leeds could secure promotion at Elland Road against Barnsley on Thursday if Brentford drop any points against Preston.
If West Brom lose their next two games then Leeds would be champions with a win by the time they travel to Derby on Sunday.
That’s got plenty of Leeds fans – and the local Derby press, who called it a ‘nightmare’ scenario – talking about a potential guard of honour at the team that scuppered us last season.
The Derby press might be looking to create a big rivalry but in truth Derby just rode our coattails last season.
The Spygate scandal gave them a perceived sense of injustice and they celebrated too hard, with binoculars over eyes when they beat us in the play-offs.
However, going there as champions would be absolute poetic justice.
If West Brom lose to Fulham and then Huddersfield on Friday and Leeds beat Barnsley, we’d be six points clear and the Baggies would only have one game left.
Would that be enough to get a guard of honour from Derby? It would be fine payback for having to play all of our games last in the run-in.
These fans are hoping beyond hope…
