Bielsa confirms who will replace Kalvin Phillips v Huddersfield
Marcelo Bielsa has confirmed that Ben White will step up from the centre of defence to play in the defensive midfield position for Leeds United, with Kalvin Phillips suspended for the game against Huddersfield on Saturday.
Phillips picked up his fifth yellow of the season in the win against Middlesbrough, with a rash challenge that could have resulted in a straight red on a different day.
Bielsa said that White “has the skills” and that Leeds had plenty of options to replace him in the centre of defence.
“It’s a new position for him,” Bielsa said in Thursday’s press conference (live in the LUFC app, Thursday, 12.30pm).
“He has the skills to play there but he’s not used to playing there.”
Asked about who would replace him in defence, Bielsa was less forthcoming.
“In this particular case, we have three players in this part of the team. We think we are in a good position to resolve this circumstance.”
Gaetano Berardi will be the favourite to step into the centre of defence, alongside Liam Cooper.
Phillips will be a big miss but we’re excited to see White in a new role.
He’s been absolutely sensational in the centre of defence and he’s shown he has more attacking ambitions with plenty of forward runs in recent games.
We’re less excited about Berardi coming in but he’s played okay this season and Huddersfield don’t score a lot of goals.
They’ve scored 22 in 19 games and there are definitely worse games that Phillips could have been suspended for.
