Stephen Warnock has slammed Diego Llorente after the Leeds United defender failed to stop Anthony Gordon’s opener for Everton at Elland Road on Tuesday night.
Gordon, 21, grabbed a 17th-minute goal after terrible defending by the Whites.
Llorente, 29, was largely to blame for the goal as Alex Iwobi’s pass went through his legs and he made a bizarre attempt to clear the ball while running away from it.
Ex-Leeds left-back Warnock was less than impressed.
“It’s a very similar goal to the one against Brentford. Lovely ball through by Iwobi, but’s poor by Llorente, he gets his feet muddled up,” said Warnock on BBC Sport’s live match blog on Tuesday (30 August, 08:19pm).
“Everton, against the run of play, first attack of the game – they’re 1-0 up.”
What was Llorente doing?
It was botched defending all over the shop by Leeds, in truth, but it was Llorente who was easily the most culpable.
Marc Roca looked as though he was running through mud when he was trying to follow Gordon running into the huge gap created by out-of-position Llorente and Robin Koch.
Iwobi’s pass then went straight at Llorente but the Spanish centre-back seemed to jump over the ball as he made a weird attempt at clearing the ball.
His action allowed the pass to go straight into Gordon, who scored his second goal of the Premier League season for Everton.
Llorente’s shown a bit of an improvement in the opening weeks of this season compared to what he was doing for the Whites last term.
The former Real Sociedad man has shown a great deal of inconsistency and maybe it’s time to get him out of the side and bring Liam Cooper back in.
Llorente’s form is a concern so as long as Cooper is fit, we wouldn’t be again seeing the Spanish defender getting dropped for a few games.
Until Cooper gets injured again, that is.
In other Leeds United news, Marsch would pay £25million to get this last-ditch forward signing over the line.
