BBC pundit slams ‘absolute mess’ Leeds United after what happened v Preston

Steve Eyre slammed Leeds United and their defending as Preston took the lead at Elland Road on 21 January, claiming it was an absolute mess to open the game.

The former Manchester City coach was highly critical of the way Leeds had started the game after Will Keane found the back of the net just a couple of minutes into the Championship clash.

It was a difficult opening to the game for Leeds with Preston applying the pressure high up the pitch and looking to attack with pace in behind Daniel Farke’s defence.

Speaking live on BBC Radio Lancashire [21 January, 12:05] Eyre commented: “An absolute mess from Leeds United. Whiteman with the free kick, Lindsay with the header across and it was a swipe from Potts, I think, and Keane finishes. It was a crowded penalty area. A horrendous start from Leeds.”

A shocking start

It was poor all-round from Leeds from the start. A ball being allowed to ricochet in behind Joe Rodon, forcing him to drag the attacker down and give away a silly free kick just 30 seconds into the game, and then the mess from that free kick, should not be happening.

What was ultimately a ball pumped into the box and headed across the goal should not have caused as much trouble as it did for Leeds, and the ensuing chaos and nobody could get to the ball was not the look of a team chasing promotion.

All parties will be disappointed with what they saw and will know what should have been done better, but allowing goals like that in the first place will be a particular frustration for Daniel Farke.

The positive of conceding so early on is you’ve got almost the entire game to try and get back in the game, so if they must make a mistake it’s better to do so early on, but for Farke it will be a case of working on that type of situation on the training ground to prevent that mess.
