Andy Madley apologises after Leeds United win v Rotherham

Rotherham United boss Leam Richardson revealed referee Andy Madley apologised after his side were beaten by Leeds United, as per Adam Pope.

The Whites claimed another three points as they defeated Rotherham 3-0 at Elland Road on Saturday 10 February.

Patrick Bamford appeared to handle the ball as he opened the scoring in the 10th minute, while he was also spotted joking around with the linesman later in the match, which Richardson took great issue with.

Speaking after the match, the 44-year-old said (via Pope’s official X, 10 February), “They’re a good team. They’ll do that to most teams here.

“Disappointed with the first goal and Andy (Madley, the ref) has apologised. Disappointed with the linesman laughing and joking with Bamford. I think that’s unprofessional.”

Leeds United and Bamford move on

Daniel Farke can perhaps consider himself lucky that Bamford’s opener was allowed to stand, but as Richardson himself admitted, Leeds are a good team and the scoreline suggests it would have been three points for the hosts whether or not that goal stood.

Madley’s apology will do very little to appease Richardson, and it is understandable why the Rotherham boss would then be unhappy with an official joking around with the player who seemed to get away with a decision in his favour.

Nonetheless, from a Leeds perspective, it is another three points on their march to promotion and they will lose very little sleep over Richardson’s complaints.

It appears almost a guarantee now that the Whites will at least finish in the play-off places, while they continue to put the pressure on Southampton in second place.

This most recent display against Rotherham suggests there are no signs of their impressive form slowing down anytime soon.
