Andy Hinchcliffe calls out Illan Meslier for what he did in Leeds United v Aston Villa
Sky Sports commentator Andy Hinchcliffe claimed Illan Meslier was “lucky” not to cost Leeds a goal after his error against Aston Villa.
Leeds played their first Premier League game in a month on Sunday afternoon as they were held by Steven Gerrard’s side to a draw in a stop-start affair littered with fouls throughout.
But after attempting to claim a cross during the first half, Hinchcliffe said live on Sky Sports [16:41, 2 October] that the France Under-21 stopper was “very fortunate” not to cause his team to fall behind.
“He makes his mind up virtually as the ball is struck that he’s coming to deal with this, and he just completely misjudges it,” he said. “He’s very fortunate.
“He’s on his way. He’s a long way out of his goal, so if you decide to come that far you’ve got to get there and catch. He’s lucky in many ways that Tyrone Mings can’t get to that ball as it drops over the goalkeeper.”
It’s been a while since the team were in Premier League action and despite a pretty good performance there was clearly some rust among the players including Meslier.
The youngster made a similar error later in the half too and Villa began to test and target him on set-pieces afterwards, noticing that he was struggling in the air.
But he made some very good stops throughout the game to keep his side level and his distribution was good too, showing why he is among the best rated goalkeepers in the Premier League.
He’s still improving his overall game and making himself the finished article, but for someone so young he certainly brings great stability to this Leeds back line and they’d be much worse off without him.
He’s not without his flaws though and it’s something he does need to eradicate to get to the top, but thankfully it came to nothing on this occasion.
