Ally McCoist fumes at Pascal Struijk for what he did in Leeds United draw v Cardiff City

Ally McCoist was absolutely furious with Pascal Struijk for his defending for Leeds in their draw to Cardiff in the FA Cup third round.

The Whites snatched a replay at the death against Championship opposition after finding themselves 2-0 down inside the first half, with Struijk poor for the opening goal in particular.

And while working on commentary for ITV Sport (8 January, 14:22) on the game, McCoist was quick to point out that the Dutch defender had looked “really uncomfortable” in the opening 20 minutes and that the defending was “really poor”.

“Pascal Struijk has not looked comfortable at all,” he said.

“He’s onside. He’s just not aware. He’s completely unaware of the people around him. He’s completely unaware of Harris going in behind him. Once it breaks, he’s got absolutely no chance.

“He’s looked really uncomfortable in the opening 20 minutes has Pascal Struijk, I’ve got to say.

“That is not a major surprise. Defensively, a really poor goal, Cardiff will be delighted. Not the easiest of finishes.

Baring in mind the fact that Struijk is considered to be a central defender naturally, this was not a good outing in his natural position.

His form this season has been largely excellent as a left-back, and he has managed to keep Junior Firpo out of the side for the most part.

But this was a chance to stake a claim for a regular spot at centre-back with Max Wober coming into the club and Liam Cooper out injured, but he failed to take it.

Defensively he was all over the place positionally, and his passing out from the back wasn’t great either. Then add to that the fact he missed a sitter at 0-2 that would’ve got the team right back into it, and it just wasn’t his night.

There’s no chance of seeing fans turn on him on the back of one performance, but calls for him to move into the middle more regularly may quieten down a little bit now after this showing.

In other Leeds news, one journalist has branded this Leeds duo as an “absolute joke” for their showing against Cardiff
