Alan Smith blasts Raphinha after footage of Leeds United incident emerges v Arsenal

Alan Smith blasted Raphinha after the Leeds United winger lost his head over Luke Ayling’s red card at Arsenal on Sunday.

After a VAR review, referee Chris Kavanagh upgraded Ayling’s yellow card to a straight sending off after the right-back’s two-footed lunge on Gabriel Martinelli in the first half.

Raphinha was booked for dissent ahead of Ayling’s red card and Sky Sports pundit Smith thought he could have been sent off himself.

“He’s going to get sent off,” said Smith on Sky Sports Premier League [8 May, 02:25pm]. “He’s chasing the ref.”

Smith added: “What’s his problem? He’s got to concentrate producing what he can produce rather than just having a go at the ref.”

Lost his head

We have no idea why Raphinha was complaining so badly to Kavanagh.

Ayling was lucky he somehow lasted on the pitch for a couple of more minutes because it was definitely a straight red card.

VAR was used correctly in this instance but if referees cannot spot that red card straight away, what hope do we have?

Raphinha hasn’t been himself for Leeds since the end of January.

While he’s still chipped in with the odd goal and assist, he looks like a player who’s absolutely done with Leeds.

Yes, he’s had one or two good games but to say he’s gone off the boil would be an understatement of how badly his form has dipped from the first half of the season.

Raphinha’s frustration was understandable but the last thing we need is him or anyone else being sent off for something as stupid as what Ayling did.

In other Leeds United news, this star player will quit Elland Road in the summer no matter what.
