Aidy White amazed by what Leeds duo did despite loss v Portsmouth – ‘Wow’

Leeds United’s 1-0 Championship defeat against Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Saturday left Aidy White shocked.

Daniel Farke’s men fell to a 1-0 defeat against Pompey on Saturday (9 March) which leaves the Whites still sitting at the top of the Championship but level on points with Sheffield United.

Leeds failed to get into the game the way they would have liked to but with four shots on target throughout the 90 minutes but they will certainly feel as though they should have done more in front of goal.

White reacts to Leeds United miss

Leeds will feel some frustration from the game after having a penalty shout in the first half after a foul on Dan James by Matt Ritchie.

While Farke’s men would have liked to show more in front of goal, when Leeds did get their chances, they certainly did not manage to take them.

It was not an afternoon to remember for Joel Piroe who missed two key chances in the game, despite being joint top goalscorer in the Championship this season.

The striker had an opportunity when the game was still 0-0 which he skied over the crossbar from close range.

Reacting to the chance on BBC Radio Leeds (9 March), White was left stunned by what Piroe did as he said: “Wow, that is terrific play from Manor Solomon and Dan James.

“Solomon does really well to round the goalkeeper and lay it back for Joel Piroe and he has missed from seven yards out. That chance was even more bread and butter than the one in the first half.”

Leeds United fall to defeat at Portsmouth

Leeds still sit at the top of the Championship table but certainly weren’t able to deliver the levels they would have hoped for against Portsmouth.

Although their opponents have shown an upturn in form of late, with the Whites seeking promotion back to the Premier League, they have to be beating teams who are 17th in the table.

Piroe will no doubt be disappointed with his performance against Pompey too, with the striker having shown much better levels this term.

Although he had to find his place in Farke’s regular starting line-up, competing with Mateo Joseph at the start of the campaign, the 25-year-old has made himself a core part of the team.

While Portsmouth generally did well at keeping the West Yorkshire outfit quiet, a player like Piroe has to be taking those chances that fall to him throughout the game and it certainly would have changed proceedings.

It was a disappointing performance for the striker but as his side now looks towards a big game against Millwall on Wednesday (12 March), he has to be ready to put this behind him and put things right.
