Adam Pope slams what he saw ‘Poor’ Piroe do in Leeds United v Cardiff

Adam Pope has slammed Joel Piroe after he failed to pass the ball onto a teammate in the opening seconds of the Championship clash between Leeds United and Cardiff on Saturday.

The Whites took the lead early on in the second-tier game but they could have been ahead within the first few minutes if the Dutchman picked his head up and passed the ball to Manor Solomon on his left-hand side.

It obviously mattered little as Leeds left Elland Road victorious with a 7-0 battering of Cardiff on a memorable day in West Yorkshire.

Speaking live on BBC Radio Leeds (1 February, 15:01pm), BBC Leeds journalist Pope and former manager Simon Grayson shared their thoughts on the striker’s fumbled chance.

“He hits it short again and it’s a poor start from Piroe,” Pope said.

To which Grayson replied: “What a quick counter-attack, Dan James uses his pace running through the middles of the back four and he plays Piroe in who has two opportunities to play it out to the left-hand side and he, unfortunately, doesn’t execute the pass.”

Pope then said: “It’s a great shame.”

Leeds United need a new striker before 3 February

Since the winter transfer window opened, Leeds have been linked with bringing in new faces in order to bolster their chances of earning promotion to the Premier League.

Many names such as Emi Buendia and Cameron Archer have been linked with an Elland Road switch but up until this point, nothing has yet come to fruition.

Piroe scored twice and Joseph was also on target as Cardiff were humiliated at Elland Road, but most fans would agree that an additional number nine in the closing days of the window would be welcome to really boost the squad in the closing cames of the window.

Archer would be an ideal solution for Leeds’ attacking problemsoptions as the former Aston Villa man has fallen out of favour with new Saints manager, Ivan Juric.

Only time will tell whether there’s enough time for the West Yorkshire outfit to make a move but if they do, it could help guarantee them promotion, which, at the end of the day, was their main goal at the start of the season.
