EFL on Quest pundit Liam Lawrence has admitted that it was written for Leeds United defender Luke Ayling to score in the 1-0 win over Bristol City.

The former Stoke City midfielder claimed if it was going to be anyone at Elland Road, it was going to be the 28-year-old against his former side.

Lawrence was full of praise for Ayling, claiming his goal was no surprise as he is a defender who spends the majority of his time attacking rather than sitting back for the Whites.

"If it was going to be anyone, it was going to be Luke Ayling," he said during EFL on Quest.

"It was written for him. He's one of those modern-day full-backs that gets forward a lot anyway, he gets a lot of chances and he's up in the box.

"Bristol City don't deal with it, Leeds keep it alive and eventually it falls to him and he just keeps it low, on target and Bentley's got no chance."

Ayling immediately hugged his former boss Lee Johnson after the game after condemning the Robins to yet another defeat against Leeds - the away side becoming the first team to lose all four fixtures against Bielsa.

One stat that particularly highlights the attacking prominence of the 28-year-old is the fact that he had FIVE shots according to WhoScored - three of those coming in the same move that finished with his match-winning strike.

The defender has certainly stepped up recently, and Ayling will be key between now and the end of the season in Bielsa's system, more performances like that, please.
