Why Leeds United gem Harry Gray is being backed to change international allegiance

Leeds United gem Harry Gray is hoping to be involved with England's Under-19s over the international break.

Versatile forward Gray is spending the season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

The 17-year-old joined the Owls for a temporary stint during the summer transfer window.

Leeds sent Gray to their Yorkshire rivals in the hope he will have plenty of action in League One.

Thus far, Gray has been a regular when fit, making six appearances for Wednesday, which would have been more had he not missed time due to concussion protocols.

Internationally, though, it has been hinted that Gray will end up switching allegiances when he is older.

Gray is earmarked as a player with huge potential at Elland Road.

Last season he spent time on loan at Rotherham United, where he scored three goals after making the move in January.

It had been expected he would move to a club in the Championship, but Leeds wanted Gray to have the experience of playing in front of a bumper crowd.

Internationally, Gray is earning recognition, too. He has already represented England at U15, 16 and 17 level, and is with the U19s for the current

However, the youngster is from a family with strong linkes to Leeds and Scotland.

His father Andy represented both during his playing career, while his great uncle is Leeds legend Eddie Gray.

It was hinted on the Square Ball Podcast by hosts Dan Moylan and Michael Normanton that Gray could now follow their lead when he is older.

"Harry Gray playing for England Under-19s against the Irish Under-19s at 7pm on Friday, although fully expected to go to Scotland when he's a grown up," Moylan said.

Normanton merely replied: "Yes, as he should."

What a wonderful choice for Gray to have.

And the beauty is, he has so much time to really think about what he wants to do.

Given the family ties, you can certainly understand why he could end up opting to represent the Tartan Army.

But, ultimately, it will be a choice he makes if and when the time comes, and one he'll consult with his family on.

For now, the teenager will be focusing on getting among the goals for Wednesday, where he has impressed without netting.

Longer term, his focus will be on representing Leeds, but thinks are going just fine with his progression so far.
