Leeds United goalkeeper James Trafford was given a fair chance with England over the international break.

The record signing played two games in the Nations League, much more than can be said for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Daniel Farke will be happy that his star striker was essentially rested, while his new goalkeeper was given the exposure by Thomas Tuchel.

With Jordan Pickford also playing twice, it opened a can of worms as to who is the preferred number one for the Three Lions.

Everton and Leeds share the joint-best defence in the Premier League this season, so that debate doesn't help, either.

Paul Robinson thinks there's a clear answer, though.

Is James Trafford now England's number one?

It's hard to tell anything from this break, given they played two games each.

Speaking for BBC Radio 5 Live Sport from Wembley, Robinson was quizzed on the state of the goalkeeping department.

"So, the goalkeeping situation has become very apparent with England during this international break," he said.

"Thomas Tuchel choosing to play James Trafford in the first two games, and the question has been asked, is Jordan Pickford England's number one? Absolutely, he's England's number one.

"We've seen before that England are guilty of taking one heavily capped goalkeeper to a tournament, and the two or three beneath him have single figure caps."

James Trafford clue that could unravel debate

While both keepers playing two games is fair, there was one talking point that opens this up.

Trafford was chosen to play against world champions, Spain, at Wembley, in the opening game of the Nations League.

Why James Trafford debate hasn’t been settled after England’s win vs Croatia

Tuchel may not realise that, but surely you play your best keeper against the very best at the start of a tournament.

Trafford could have the upper hand, then.

Playing Croatia away in a 7-0 win and Cezchia at home where they hardly touched the ball, isn't exactly a glowing reference for Pickford.

And now, Trafford returns to Elland Road looking to continue his sensational start to this season in the Premier League.

With Arsenal, Manchester United, Sunderland and Bournemouth to come this month, he could be a busy man.

Farke backs Trafford all the way, and it's that confidence that will leave him in a really good position to nail down his England spot.
