Leeds United fans were hoping for a helping hand from 'secret agent' Lee Bowyer tonight but none of them really thought there was much chance of Charlton getting anything out of the game against Brentford tonight.

Brentford had won their last five games to nil, scoring 14 goals in the process.

They're the form team and the one with the best chance of catching Leeds.

But then Bowyer's side took the lead. Charlton striker Macauley Bonne put the cat among the pigeons when he scored in the eighth minute of the game.

A deep cross was headed back at the back post by Jake Forster-Caskey and Bonne was there to touch the ball home.

It gave Leeds fans hope although everyone realised that with 82 minutes to go, Charlton could still get hammered.

Incredibly, Bowyer's side kept them out until the 75th minute when Said Benrahma won and scored a penalty.

And then the inevitable happened as Brentford scored a late winner through centre-back Ethan Pinnock.

It was a rollercoaster ride for Leeds fans who were getting score updates from wherever they could, with some watching a clock ticking down on betting websites.

One said the late winner felt like a "kick in the stomach" while another bemoaned the fact that Leeds have to play after Brentford every game – he claimed it was "rigged" against the Whites.

A Charlton win or a draw would have been huge for Leeds but now the pressure is back on.

Brentford are just three points back and two behind West Brom. Three points on Thursday is a must.

To make matters worse, Fulham beat Nottingham Forest 1-0 and they're still in with a shot at the top two, five points back before Leeds kick-off at Elland Road.
