Steven Gerrard has explained why Dominic Calvert-Lewin is an "absolute nightmare" after what he saw in Leeds United's draw with Manchester United.

Calvert-Lewin was on target once again for Leeds as they recovered from a goal down to draw 1-1 at Elland Road on Sunday.

The England international has been superb for the Whites ever since arriving as a free agent from Everton in August 2025.

He has four goals in seven Premier League matches this season, as well as a goal in the Carabao Cup.

That form has helped earn him a recall to the first England senior squad post-World Cup.

Gerrard has also been impressed by what he has seen from a player he used to consider a "rival".

What's impressed Steven Gerrard about Dominic Calvert-Lewin?

Gerrard did not quite cross paths with Calvert-Lewin on the field, having left Liverpool just before the striker made his Everton bow.

However, speaking on Monday's edition of The Overlap Daily, Gerrard admitted DCL was once a "rival" of his merely due to their opposing Merseyside connections.

But Gerrard is fond of the 29-year-old and is glad he is now free of any injury issues.

"I've met him a couple of times and he's a great kid," Gerrard said. "The best thing for me is to see him playing, staying healthy and consistently completing games.

"If he's fit and available, everyone knows the level of player you're dealing with. He must be an absolute nightmare for centre-backs because he can do everything.

"He's good on the floor with his hold-up play, he's quick, he can run the shoulders and score with both feet and is so dangerous from set-pieces. His finish against United was terrific.

"I never had a doubt the level of player he is because I saw him doing it a number of times for Everton and for England. It's great to see him back scoring goals and enjoying his football again."

Gerrard highlighted how big a threat Calvert-Lewin was against United from deliveries into the box, including for his goal.

Gerrard's big takeaway from Leeds 1-1 Man United

Liverpool legend Gerrard also talked more generally about Leeds' feisty draw with Man United.

Only four yellow cards were dished out at Elland Road, but that does not tell the whole story.

Both sides could easily have had players sent off, but referee Darren England was happy to be lenient and also allow play to flow where he could.

Gerrard loved the way England refereed the game and said the match itself reminded him why he loves the Premier League.

It is a shame from Leeds' perspective that three points were not collected, but if you cannot win a game, then simply do not lose it.
