Andy Hinchcliffe was left in a rage with Leeds United goalkeeper Ilan Meslier after an incident during the Whites' win over Preston North End.

Daniel Farke's side bounced back having conceded early to claim all three points at Elland Road on Sunday (21 January) thanks to goals from Dan James and Joel Piroe, but it was far from the perfect performance in the 2-1 triumph.

One shaky moment came late in the first half when Ben Whiteman curled a ball into Leeds' penalty area, only for Meslier to opt to punch straight back into danger under no pressure, a decision that left Sky Sports' Hinchcliffe enraged.

Speaking on Sky Sports Football (21 January, 12:33) he said: "The fans' reaction tells you everything. Why are you punching that? Just catch it. There's plenty of flight on the ball and he's under absolutely no pressure.

"Why on earth are you punching that clear and keeping the ball alive to a degree? There's no need for it."

So, so shaky

Meslier is an incredibly strange goalkeeper and Leeds United supporters have almost come to expect that there is a chance that the Frenchman could well throw the ball into his own net if he's having an off day.

Too often, the Whites stopper makes mistakes that a keeper of his quality really shouldn't be making and a big part of that is his decision making, which has left a lot to be desired throughout the entirety of his career in England.

Leeds United

He is capable of making some truly world-class stops and, when he is at the races, there are few better than him in the Championship, but his inconsistency not only unsettles supporters but also those in front of him in the backline.

Hopefully, as he continues to grow and mature, Meslier will begin to iron out these mistakes and lapses of judgment. Until then, Leeds fans are going to have to continue to hold their breath whenever their number one claims a high ball.
