Marcelo Bielsa racked up his fair share of iconic moments as Leeds United boss.

Arriving in 2018, the Argentine became a cult hero at Elland Road, guiding the Whites to the Premier League two years later.

He would lose his job in 2022 with Leeds struggling in the Premier League, but will always be remembered fondly in West Yorkshire.

This year, he led Uruguay into the World Cup, after finishing third at the 2024 Copa America.

However, La Celeste would crash out of the competition on Friday thanks to a 1-0 defeat against Spain.

Bielsa would deliver a passionate response to the defeat in the aftermath, with the South American nation failing to reach the knockout stages of the World Cup twice in a row.

Marcelo Bielsa pulls no punches with Uruguay verdict

It has been a disastrous tournament for Uruguay, who failed to beat both Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, before losing to the European Champions in their final match.

His side would set up in a way that Leeds fans won't recognise, with Uruguay sitting deep to defend against Spain for the entirety of the 90 - undone as Alex Baena opened the scoring before half time.

In a passionate interview, Bielsa would be seen screaming, before he admitted he is "responsible for this disappointment."

Continuing in his post-match press conference, he would say: "Obviously, I don't need to define this performance. If you ask me how my time [with the national team] will be remembered, it is a tenure that left nothing behind.

"I leave nothing to Uruguayan football, because any contribution I might make to a country where I have worked for three years fails to take root if results aren't achieved," he said.

As things stand, Uruguay sit as the 11th-worst third place side, with their tally of two points leaving them unable to progress, leaving the former Whites boss incredibly frustrated.

Marcelo Bielsa sparked a mixed reaction in English football

During his time in England, Bielsa remained a polarising figure - though he was adored at Elland Road.

Fans across the country will remember his 70-minute presentation after the Spygate saga, or the flashpoint against Aston Villa when he screamed "give the goal" at his side.

These do not come close to Friday's reaction though, with his Uruguay side crashing out of the World Cup.

Potentially the only scenario that does come close, is his rant to the press in 2020, after his side were defeated 6-2 by Manchester United.

His tactical approach would come under fire throughout his spell in England, naturally after his side had suffered a heavy defeat.

In the aftermath of the loss, he called out the press, accusing figures of trying to "destablise" players by questioning his style of play.

The rant would be a superb one lasting well over half an hour, insisting that his approach would absolutely not change.

Then there is the famous spygate press conference, where he revealed all of his secrets for an upcoming clash with Derby that will go down in English footballing history.

Whites fans would adore him for this, as the Argentine provided the rock and roll football Elland Road really craves, meaning that he will always be welcome back in West Yorkshire despite the eventual demise.
