Simon Wood has praised his Leeds United Women players for responding with a "really important" victory over West Didsbury & Chorlton Women.

The Whites entered the contest on the back of successive losses, including defeat in the Women's National League Cup at the hands of Halifax.

However, Leeds saw off West Didsbury & Chorlton in the first round of the Women's FA Cup at Brookburn Road on Sunday (12 November).

Speaking to LUTV after the game [12 November, 29s], Wood said: "It was really important [to get the win]. We're a club that wants to win games.

"What the FA Cup brings is a bit of acknowledgement towards how well the players are working to progress, so I'm really pleased.

"Credit to West Didsbury. Their fans were loud throughout, so once they scored a second it lifted the players.

"We found a way into the game and were a lot more clinical in the second half with some top-notch finishing."

Job done

It would have been easy for Leeds to feel sorry for themselves after some disappointing results over the past couple of weekends.

Even more so when finding themselves 2-1 down early in the second half after Katie Astle had given them the lead.

Wood's side dug deep, though, and they are into the hat for round two thanks in large to Astle's hat-trick.

Sarah Danby and Kathryn Smith were also on target for the visitors- on top of an own goal - in a ruthless second-half display that saw five goals scored.

It takes Leeds' goal tally for the season to 39 in 14 matches - an average of 2.8 a game - but they are still conceding at a heavy rate.

United now have a second-round tie against an as yet unknown opponent to look forward to, before focus then switches back to league matters.

It may not have been pretty for the first 50 minutes or so at Brookburn Road, but at least a corner has now been turned.
