Leeds United have made contact with Brazilian club Palmieras over Uruguayan left-back Joaquin Piquerez, who they are keen on bringing to Elland Road this summer, according to Torcedores.

The Brazilian news outlet reported via their website on 22 July that Leeds United have contacted the club with their interest, but the board have ruled out the sale of Piquerez, as they are bombarded for numerous players.

The news comes following a report that current Leeds United left-back Junior Firpo may be set for a move to Spain, with three Spanish clubs interested in the Colombian who spent two years at Elland Road [OK Fichajes].

Leeds exploring their options

Leeds United's interest in Piquerez looks fairly new, as it was first reported this morning via Brazilian journalist Diego Firmino, but shows the club are exploring their options for recruitment as far-flung as South America.

Piquerez was handed his most recent Uraguay cap by former Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa, so there is already a connection between the player and the club, with Bielsa sure to put in a good word about his former club.

There has been a clear aim by the new Leeds United owners to bring in players with international experience, with Piquerez's nine caps adding to those of the newest Leeds signing Ethan Ampadu, who has 44 caps for Wales.

If Leeds can agree a deal on terms that suit them, bringing in a new left-back to provide quality in their squad after the departure of a number of defensive players already would be a brilliant addition.

The club have already seen a number of players leave Elland Road this season, but following the announcement of the competition of 49ers takeover, the club are finally looking to spend some money.
