Leeds United are targeting two American signings for the summer, with Barcelona's Sergino Dest joining Brenden Aaronson on the list, TEAMtalk reports.

Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Aaronson was the primary target in January yet proved impossible to secure, but Dest is a new name mooted to arrive at Elland Road this year.

Recent news in terms of transfers between the Whites and the Catalan giants has focused on Raphinha heading the other way, but the 21-year-old American full-back may be on the cards for a Premier League move.

Dest moved to the Camp Nou from Ajax before last season but is apparently out of favour under current manager Xavi.

The report says: "TEAMtalk understands that Leeds believe he would be an excellent addition to their squad.

"Dest is predominantly a right-back, but can play on either side. He can also operate further up the field in a wing-back role, with his flexibility of interest to Leeds – if the price is right."

Fool me twice, shame on me

Alarm bells might be ringing among United fans as it was only last year that an out-of-favour full-back arrived from Barcelona.

Junior Firpo was signed before the season but has struggled to adapt and is now injured.

The 17-cap USMNT international Dest is young and has potential, but there has been talk of him being available since not long after he moved to La Liga.

Perhaps more development in the Eredivisie would have been better for him before making the step up.

If he is up to scratch it could be a useful addition, considering Luke Ayling is now 30.

Stuart Dallas' enduring use shows the benefit of having squad players that shuffle around the formation.

But the club will need to ensure there is enough quality in Dest's game to make him useful to Jesse Marsch, as Firpo's struggles have shown that employment by a European heavyweight is no guarantee of success.
