Matt Targett appears highly unlikely to join Leeds United with Newcastle set to offload another defender in Lloyd Kelly.

Although the Whites are yet to make a signing, plenty of players have been linked with Targett one of those mooted to make the switch to Elland Road [The Sun].

However, as of yet, Leeds are yet to make an approach for the defender [Ben Jacobs] and any likelihood of that happening has now surely been curtailed.

Kelly looks set to depart the North East to join Italian giants Juventus [Chronicle], making it highly unlikely Newcastle will allow Targett to leave the club as well.

Leeds United have other priorities to work on before 3 February

While the addition of Targett, or any full-back for that matter, would be welcomed, Leeds simply need to be prioritising other areas of the squad if they are working on deals.

Although Joel Piroe netted twice in the 7-0 thrashing of Cardiff, a striker arrival is still top of the list when it comes to transfer priorities, at least it should be.

A signing in that area could prove to be the difference between automatic promotion or play-offs and while it may work out in favour of the Whites, it is a gamble that just doesn't need to be taken.

However, time is ticking away at a scary pace with the deadline just over 24 hours away to conclude any business and as it stands, Leeds are one of very few clubs yet to strengthen their squad at all.

These final hours could either be very exciting for Whites supporters, or quite the opposite.
