Leeds United make 'serious' push to sign Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid - David Ornstein
Leeds United have got "serious" interest in signing Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid in January, according to David Ornstein.
The Whites were linked with a move for the Brazil forward recently, as he looks set to leave the La Liga side following a lack of regular first-team football this season which led him to miss out on a spot in the World Cup squad.
The player now looks set to leave and according to The Athletic (12 December), Leeds are looking to get a deal over the line quickly after missing out on Cody Gakpo in the summer having left it late to do a transfer.
"There is serious interest, too, from Leeds United," he wrote.
"They tried to get Cunha before he went to Atletico from Hertha Berlin in the summer of 2021 and he knows their head coach Jesse Marsch from their time together at another German club, RB Leipzig, in 2018-19.
"Having narrowly missed out on Cody Gakpo of PSV Eindhoven and the Netherlands in the summer, Leeds know how important it is to pounce before players they want in the market become out of reach for them."
Excellent
This is obviously a transfer that the manager and the board have had their eye on for a while, with relationships running deep and it now looks like they could pull the trigger.
There had been some suggestions that Cunha would only leave on loan, while some suggested it would be a permanent deal, but either way Leeds should be in the running to get it done.
His goal record isn't the most impressive, but whenever he's been a central figure in a team he has done really well creatively and that is something that is missing at Elland Road.
His pace, ability to use both feet and skill would be most welcome by Leeds fans and with Atletico Madrid not being in the strongest financial position it could lead to a fairly priced deal being struck.
Marsch will know all about him and how to use him, and on top of that Cunha has a point to prove that he's capable of performing at the top level. Having watched Raphinha shine and take a spot in the World Cup, he may see Elland Road as the perfect platform to shine.
