Leeds United: EFL continue to look at issue with authorities urged to take action

Graham Smyth has urged authorities to put an end to the Jimmy Savile chants Leeds United fans have been subject to, with the EFL already investigating.

The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist took to X on 5 March, explaining that nobody seems willing to have the conversation in a public setting, but something must be done about the chanting.

Smyth shared that the EFL have already begun looking into the issue, but suggested the matter needs more urgency after more occurrences as Leeds played Huddersfield.

Tragedy chanting is unacceptable - at Elland Road and everywhere else

In the past, authorities have taken action over so-called "tragedy chanting" from the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool about the Munich air disaster and Hillsborough disaster respectively - it's now time to take action about the Savile chants.

Individual fans have been arrested for tragedy chanting as recently as last weekend when a Manchester City fan was escorted out of The Etihad [Daily Mail, 3 March], and the songs sung by away fans at Elland Road should be held to the same level of accountability.

As Smyth shared in his article for the Yorkshire Evening Post, an incident against Plymouth earlier this season saw ripples of laughter around Home Park, where Leeds fans had travelled in their numbers.

Supporters making light of the disgusting events in an attempt to score points against the opposition should not be acceptable in any circumstances.

All too often are these chants heard both at Elland Road and when Leeds travel away, and while they have been brushed under the carpet for years, action needs to be taken by relevant authorities to put an end to it.
