Eddie Gray has revealed that Leeds United wonder Archie Gray will represent England at international level rather than Scotland despite his best efforts to convince him otherwise.

Eddie - a Leeds legend in his own right and Archie's uncle - explained that he tried his best to persuade the 18-year-old to switch allegiances but was unsuccessful.

Having represented England through the youth age groups, questions had emerged about whether he would represent the Three Lions or switch to Scotland - the country that his dad, uncle and grandad all represented.

Speaking live on talkSPORT [23 April, 07:40], Gray joked: "Yep, unfortunately, that's how it is.

"He's played for England from a young age, since the under-15s, he's played through the youth ranks. I can't persuade him to play for Scotland, I tried my best but nothing's worked."

It says a lot about the form Gray has shown at Elland Road this season that despite his young age and relative inexperience, there has already been plenty of discussion surrounding his future international career and where that may be.

It's safe to say Gray remains out of contention for the England squad as things stand ahead of the European Championships this summer, but the upcoming World Cup in 2026 may represent a more realistic target.

With the likes of Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice nailed on for his position, the centre of midfield remains a contentious position for Gareth Southgate, with up-and-coming stars such as Kobbie Mainoo and Adam Wharton also under consideration.

Gray would rank alongside the latter two as a younger and more inexperienced option, but it seems he will have to continue these performances if he can step up to the Premier League next season - whether that is with Leeds or elsewhere - to get into Southgate's plans.
