Leeds United could hire Steven Gerrard as new manager with Gary McAllister as his assistant

Leeds United could make a move for Steven Gerrard as their new manager with Gary McAllister as his assistant, according to The Mirror.

The Whites have seen their bid to replace Jesse Marsch hit the bricks after being rejected by several options, and their move for Andoni Iraola at a standstill due to his release clause.

With the club wanting to bring someone in as soon as possible to get their season back on track, the club could now look at former Rangers boss Gerrard as an option.

"Leeds United could make a move to install Steven Gerrard as their new boss after a number of rejections," they wrote (11 February).

"The former Rangers and Aston Villa manager would link up with Elland Road favourite Gary McAllister, a member of the 1992 Championship winning side under Howard Wilkinson.

"The McAllister factor has been discussed by the Leeds hierarchy, desperate to avoid another scramble to avoid relegation from the Premier League."

McAllister is a favourite at Elland Road for his playing days with Leeds, but he and Gerrard as a duo have already shown that the Premier League was hard work for them.

The pair were together at Aston Villa earlier this season and got sacked after a poor showing, with Unai Emery since coming in and directing that team well away from a relegation battle.

Bringing Gerrard into this situation at Leeds would just be strange, considering he was on track to be part of it himself with another team that he had been at for a year and spent a lot of money with.

This team wouldn't be his, is used to playing a completely different way and doesn't have time to adapt to drastic changes if they're to avoid the drop.

Bringing him in could be a decent option in the future if he goes and proves himself elsewhere, and McAllister coming would definitely help things, but he should be an absolute last resort for this board for right now.
