Jayne Ludlow was surprised to see Leeds United ace Dan James take the fifth penalty for Wales in their defeat against Poland on Tuesday (26 March).

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live on Tuesday (via BBC Sport, 10:34pm), the pundit said she was in "shock" and that it was "absolutely devastating" for Rob Page's side to lose on penalties, with the Whites winger being the only player to miss from the spot.

Ludlow gave the 26-year-old credit for stepping up and taking the penalty as she admitted to being "gutted" for him as Wales missed out on earning their place at the European Championships.

"I'm in shock, that's absolutely devastating," said Ludlow. "I was surprised to see Dan James in that fifth place, he's a young guy, maybe not as experienced as some of the others there. All credit to Dan James for stepping up, I'm gutted for him."

Leeds United must rally around Dan James amid Wales disappointment

It's going to be an extremely tough few days for James as he is no doubt going to be feeling down after missing the crucial penalty for Wales in their defeat against Poland.

The winger would have been hoping to have a positive impact after scoring in the previous match against Finland, but it just wasn't his night in Cardiff.

There was an awful lot of pressure on him stepping up to take the last penalty in the shootout after everyone before him had scored, but he deserves credit for putting himself forward.

Dan James has been in fine form for Leeds United this season

The Whites are going to have to rally around him over the coming days and help him get his focus back on their promotion bid.

While it isn't a nice situation for him, these things happen to the best players and he will be looking to bounce back stronger after having an excellent season at Elland Road.
