CBS journalist Jake Winderman has blasted Leeds United for their January signing of Max Wober, claiming it "makes no sense".

The Whites are closing in on the £14m signing of Red Bull Salzburg skipper Wober for their problem left-back position, despite the 24-year-old being a natural centre-back who can also play at full-back.

But Winderman is unhappy at the deal and says he doesn't get it, when they already have a natural centre-back-cum-left-back in Pascal Struijk at the club doing a good job.

"I really don't get it," he wrote on his personal Twitter account (2 January).

"Isn't the whole point that Leeds needs a left back who isn't a converted centre-back like we have right now with Pascal Struijk? Makes no sense... #LUFC"

He's got a point...

There's no doubting the ability that Wober has as a left-back, and he's someone that Jesse Marsch knows well from their time working together in Salzburg previously.

But the whole problem that Leeds have had in recent seasons is that they don't have a natural left-back to get up and down the pitch that they can rely on, because Junior Firpo has been a flop.

Stuart Dallas and now Struijk have been admirable stop-gap solutions in the role, while Cody Drameh has somehow barely been an afterthought in the position.

So signing another player whose preferred position is to play in the middle, but is capable of playing out wide, is an interesting and strange call. With that said though, there has to be a level of trust with the club.

They have identified Wober as the man to solve their issues, and he will know the system well from playing under Marsch before. If he hits the ground running, then these complaints will be forgotten about quickly.
