Jon Newsome slammed the decision to book Leeds United forward Crysencio Summerville during their 1-0 Championship playoff defeat against Southampton at Wembley.

With the first half drawing to a close, Summerville slid in to win the ball from Saints defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis, leading to the Whites winger receiving a yellow card.

However, Newsome has called the booking "pathetic" and feels Summerville's challenge did not deserve to be punished.

Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds (26 May), he said: "That's pathetic [the decision to book Summerville].

"All Crysencio Summerville has done is slid in and tried to protect the ball. He's not done anything."

Crysencio Summerville disappoints at Wembley for Leeds United

Summerville's perhaps unfair yellow card was, unfortunately for the Leeds winger, one of the more memorable incidents involving the forward at Wembley.

The recently crowned Championship Player of the Season was not at his dazzling best in the playoff final, failing to hit the target with any of his four shots and creating no chances [FotMob].

The Dutchman racked up an impressive 21 goals and 10 assists across all competitions, but was unable to add to his tally when the Whites needed it most.

LEEDS UNITED
Crysencio Summerville has been excellent for Leeds United this season

He was so quiet, in fact, that head coach Daniel Farke decided to replace him in the 74th minute, bringing on Jaidon Anthony.

Summerville's future at the club may now be in doubt, with Leeds set to remain in the Championship for another season.
