Joe Gelhardt was not part of the Leeds United squad that arrived to face Harrogate Town, according to Beren Cross.

The Athletic journalist shared an update on the Leeds personnel via his personal X account shortly before the team news was announced for Saturday's (11 January) FA Cup third-round tie.

Ilia Gruev was part of the squad, well ahead of schedule, but a number of youngsters tipped to feature, as well as Gelhardt, were nowhere to be seen at Elland Road.

"Astonishing speed of recovery from Gruev," Cross wrote. "Bulgaria boss was predicting March for his return to action.

"No sign of any youngsters or Gelhardt in the squad. Looks very strong."

Joe Gelhardt set to leave Leeds United in January transfer window

Gelhardt simply cannot get a look-in under Daniel Farke. Missing out in the Championship is one thing; failing to get a chance in an FA Cup tie with Harrogate is another.

Hull City were widely expected to be the favourites to sign Gelhardt this month, but fellow second-tier side Luton Town are also now in the running [Football League World, 10 January].

MOT Leeds News understands the striker wants a move this month, but the Whites would prefer not to send the 22-year-old to another Championship club.

That could explain why Gelhardt is somewhat in limbo right now. That is quite simply not fair on the striker, who just wants to be playing football.

Patrick Bamford's injury may force him to be patient, but unless he is himself injured for the Harrogate game, his absence simply cannot be explained.

Either way, it now seems certain Gelhardt will not be a Leeds player come 3 February. If he is, making him sit on the bench - or indeed in the stands - will not reflect well on the Whites.
