Inter Milan are keeping Leeds United ace Wilfried Gnonto as a background option if they can sell Joaquin Correa, according to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla.

The Sport Italia journalist wrote on his own website (6 July) that Inter are focused on bringing Romelu Lukaku back to San Siro, and the deal that would see Andre Onana join Manchester United.

However, he added the Nerazzurri will want to sign another forward, especially if they can find a buyer for Correa.

Federico Bonazzoli of Salernitana is named as one option, but bringing back Gnonto - who was previously a part of Inter's academy set-up - would be a "dream", Pedulla wrote.

Inter still face stiff competition for his signature, though, with Premier League sides Everton and Aston Villa strongly in the race.

Gnonto exit seems inevitable

The Leeds fans really took Wilfried Gnonto to their hearts last season following his arrival from FC Zurich, with his full-blooded and exciting displays winning over the Elland Road faithful.

The 19-year-old was trusted with just 14 Premier League starts, though, and 24 top-flight appearances in total, with calls for him to be utilised more often falling on deaf ears.

Leeds' relegation means that several of their best players are now targets for other clubs across Europe and Gnonto, given his age and direct style, is a player that would suit many teams.

Now it really depends what Gnonto wants to do. He could stay at Leeds where he would be a wonderful asset in the Championship. He could opt to go back to Inter where there will undoubtedly be emotional ties. Or he could opt for another crack at the Premier League.

It does feel increasingly that his exit from Elland Road is inevitable.
