Harry Gray lucky to avoid punishment after wild footage of Leeds United loanee at Sheffield Wednesday

Harry Gray kickstarted his loan spell away from Leeds United in wild fashion at Sheffield Wednesday.

Those who expected goals and non-stop attacking highlights from the young striker would be mistaken.

In his first competitive game for the Owls, Gray started in the Carabao Cup first-round against Bolton on Saturday.

It was a 1-0 win for Wednesday against Championship opposition, but the goal or result wasn't the talking point of the game.

Gray was involved in a wild incident that saw Xavier Simons sent off.

With the midfielder charging away, Gray pulled him back, only to be punched in the stomach as Simons was sent off for violent conduct.

This isn't the kind of footage we expected to see from the young attacker's loan spell at Hillsborough.

Keith Hackett believes that Gray himself was actually lucky to avoid punishment, too.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, the ex-FIFA referee believes there is more to come from the incident.

"A clear shirt pull by the Sheffield Wednesday’s Harry Gray left a frustrated Xavier Simons punching his opponent and rightly dismissed from the field of play," Hackett said.

"The Bolton player will receive a three match ban and a disappointing start to his season.

"With players of both teams coming together in the aftermath of the pinchboth clubs run the risk of receiving a charge for failing to control their players.

"Gray for his holding offence stopping a promising attack was lucky to escape a yellow card."

How did Harry Gray peform in Sheffield Wednesday debut?

As Daniel Farke watched his Leeds side beat RB Leipzig 2-0 at Elland Road, Gray was helping his loan side to victory.

This isn't what Farke will have been expecting, though.

Playing 79 minutes, Gray attempted three shots on goal, with two of those blocked and one on target.

The 17-year-old has confidence in his game to keep trying, even when things aren't coming off.

Gray lost possession 11 times, via Sofascore, but only failed to successfully complete two of his 26 touches.

Carrying the ball 13 times for over 125 metres, Gray will continue to play a huge role in this Sheffield Wednesday team.

As for the drama, let's hope that gets left behind.
