Gretar Steinsson is to leave his role as Leeds United technical director, according to Nancy Froston.

The Athletic journalist posted on X (8 November) to report that the 42-year-old will instead take up different role in the 49ers Enterprises global operation.

She added that no direct replacement will be made for Steinsson at Elland Road and that the transition is already in progress.

Leeds United owners 49ers Enterprises set potential plans in motion for multi-club model

Froston wrote that Steinsson's move within the 49ers model will focus more on industry trend research, technology and player advancements.

Essentially, it looks as though the 49ers could be setting themselves up to have a structure in place for the future that will allow them to have a multi-club model, something that several clubs are now doing, with Manchester City of course being the most notable example.

While some fans might fear the idea of this there are also tangible benefits were it to happen. Leeds would have a wider network of scouts and data, while it might be beneficial long term in regards to player recruitment.

Steinsson was brought to Elland Road in July 2023 as part of a technical restructure when the 49ers bought out Andrea Radrizzani.

He might not have direct involvement in the day-to-day running of the club but it is clear that his work elsewhere in the 49ers structure will be with the intention of improving the infrastructure at the club in the long term.

And hopefully those plans will be in place for a club playing in the Premier League.
