Adam Bridge was wowed by Ethan Ampadu after a "wonderful" strike in the Leeds United loss against Burnley (14 September).

The talkSPORT commentator reacted after the Leeds skipper whipped a shot goalward, only for James Trafford to tip it over.

It wasn't meant to be for the Whites, losing 1-0 to the Clarets after an early mistake at Elland Road led to Luca Koleosho's winner.

Speaking live on talkSPORT 2 (14 September), Bridge hailed Ampadu for his effort.

“Gnonto’s got it back again, Gnonto’s on the charge, inside the penalty area, gets blocked, Ampadu with a shot and then upped over the top by Trafford,” he said.

“A wonderful effort from Leeds United’s captain Ethan Ampadu and Trafford had to be at his best to turn that over.”

Ethan Ampadu forced off for Leeds United

Following the exit of Liam Cooper, Ampadu has stepped up to take the armband.

It's a familiar role for the former Chelsea man, having led his team out for most of the 2023/24 season following an injury to Pascal Struijk.

The club have made many additions throughout the summer window with Joe Rodon returning permanently and the likes of Ao Tanaka coming in to help fill the void left by the exits of Glen Kamara and Archie Gray.

There's no doubt that they'd have likely wanted to showcase their new strength in numbers against a recently relegated Premier League side, but it wasn't to be in the end.

Ampadu's chance was one of Leeds' best in the second half, but it was those huge chances from Mateo Joseph and Gnonto will be looking back on.

It is time to move on quickly, with a run of wins now needed to kickstart this season properly.
