David James makes Leeds United relegation prediction despite win v Liverpool

Leeds United ended an eight-game winless streak on Saturday evening against Liverpool, but David James still thinks the Whites will go down.

Leeds headed to Anfield on Saturday evening knowing points were a must if Jesse Marsch was to keep his job at Elland Road.

Despite Liverpool's impressive record on Merseyside, an early goal from Rodrigo and a last-gasp winner from Crysencio Summerville handed the Whites an unexpected 2-1 victory.

The much-needed three points lifted Leeds out of the relegation zone, but former Liverpool shot-stopper James still thinks performances need to improve if Marsch is to guide the Whites to safety.

"I would argue that as good as a performance we were talking about, it wasn’t a great performance by Leeds because they got battered and their goalkeeper was man of the match," said James via Premier League productions (29/10/22, 10:20 pm).

"But they got the points, which is the most important thing.

“If Leeds continue playing like that for the rest of the season then they will go down because you can’t allow the opposition to have nine shots on target every game."

Bitter

James' claim sounds nothing but bitter. Leeds headed to Anfield as huge underdogs and came away with all three points after a hugely spirited and resilient display.

Yes, Illan Meslier was colossal for Leeds in goal, but Marsch's side also carved out a number of key opportunities and could have easily scored three or four with Patrick Bamford and Brenden Aaronson both enjoying big chances.

Frankly, it was a Leeds outfit that came out fighting against one of the strongest sides in the Premier League while extremely low on confidence.

Leeds' defence were cut open a few times by Liverpool but Jurgen Klopp's team won't be the opposition every week and as confidence is restored then the backline will slowly improve.

The Anfield win does need to be used as a turning point and a building block by Marsch, but Saturday night's performance was outstanding and deserves heaps of praise, not criticism.
