Daniel Farke has revealed that Ilia Gruev believed he could feature for Leeds United against Sunderland if he were to take some painkillers.

The Bulgarian international missed the Whites' 2-2 draw with the Black Cats on Friday (4 October) and is set for an extended spell on the sidelines having picked up a knee injury in the draw with Norwich City [].

Although Leeds' doctors were quick to suggest Gruev wouldn't play again in 2024, Farke admits that the midfielder "warrior" was more than eager to take to the field only days after his initial injury.

As quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post (7 October) he said: "Even on Wednesday he was there and quite positive, saying some painkillers boss and I think I'm available on Friday.

"The doctors said no, no, you're not available, you won't return back in this calendar year onto the pitch. It says a lot about his character, he's a warrior. A bit like Ethan Ampadu."

How long will Leeds United star Ilia Gruev be out at Elland Road?

While it is a massive blow for the Whites to be without two of their best midfielder so early on in the season, both players seem to be determined to get back out on the field sooner rather than later after their respective setbacks.

Of course, Farke and the rest of his medical staff will be reluctant to rush either Gruev or Ampadu back prematurely, but the midfielder's comments after the draw with Norwich suggest he will be pushing himself all the way.

Hopefully, Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell will manage to hold the fort in the meantime. Both players have had limited involvement so far this term, however, they impressed when they paired together in the heart of the team against the Black Cats.

If Leeds United can remain within touching distance, at least, of the automatic promotion places the returns of Ampadu and Gruev later in the season will ensure that they have an excellent chance of securing a return to the Premier League.
