Ryan Taylor believes Leeds United must have "extensively scouted" Georginio Rutter to move for him even though his record "isn't incredible".

The Express journalist is confident that the club will get the January deal over the line now, even if much of what they are buying is future potential.

Forbes journalist Manuel Veth reported on Tuesday morning (10 July) that the deal is now "nearing completion" with a club record fee expected to be approximately €37million [£32.7million].

Taylor told GiveMeSport of the young Frenchman: “Rutter’s goal record in the Bundesliga isn’t incredible, but it’s clear he must have been extensively scouted, and he has high potential for the future.

“So, I do think that is a deal Leeds will look to complete, and I do think it’s one they will probably get over the line.”

Strike early

There is cause for excitement that all the signs point to this deal getting done in the near future, even if the massive fee is going to carry a significant risk.

But it is a high-risk high-reward move because the Whites have committed to land a player who they expect to be worth far more in the future.

Waiting for him to prove himself in the Bundesliga is a gamble that could lead him to follow the Cody Gakpo route and end up moving straight to a title-chasing side.

Leeds United know that if they are to land another Raphinha, or someone who becomes an even bigger star, they are going to have to put trust in their scouting and hope they can coach that level of talent out of them.

If it pays off Rutter could be a star at Elland Road, but if he takes time to adapt questions will be asked whether that money could have been better spent.

Breaking up a club record fee for two or three solid but unspectacular performers might be the safe bet, but the potential impact they can have is limited.

While spending big on an upcoming sensation could mean a huge impact or a minimal one, and only time will tell which one it is assuming Rutter is wearing a Whites shirt soon, but the club must be pretty confident that it is the former.
