Alfred Schreuder is now the prime candidate for the Leeds manager's job after watching the team face Manchester United with his agent, according to De Telegraaf.

The Whites are looking to replace Jesse Marsch, who was sacked on Monday (6 February) after poor form left the club in a relegation battle for a second consecutive season.

But after running into issues with prime targets Carlos Corberan, Arne Slot and Andoni Iraola, the club have now turned their attention to former Ajax boss Schreuder and he was at Elland Road to watch their game on Sunday (12 February).

"In England it is common to target several trainers," they wrote (12 February).

"Schreuder came into the picture at Leeds after it had reported in vain to Feyenoord coach Arne Slot.

"Schreuder - after his resignation from Ajax - does not seem to sit still for a long time. Schreuder is in Leeds with agent Milos Malenovic, who is also Dusan Tadic's agent."

Question marks

Schreuder had a great time at Brugge in Belgium winning the title, and has worked with some top coaches as an assistant including Erik Ten Hag, Julien Naglesmann and Ronald Koeman.

But his chance at the big time with Ajax this season was a total disaster, leading them to fifth in the table and having the fans completely turn on him for his style of play and poor results.

Considering the type of football that Leeds have become accustomed to and the battle they find themselves in right now in the Premier League, Schreuder would represent a gamble.

He prefers to play front-footed football which is obviously great, but if things go against him he doesn't tend to have a plan B - something that got Marcelo Bielsa the sack a year ago.

It would be a risk, but there aren't many clear options out there right now and the board have done well in recent years for the most part with big decisions so we have to trust they can get this one right too.
